Digital magnification mammography. A new technique for improved visualization of microcalcifications in mammography

Description
Special X-ray tubes with electro-magnetic focusing provide a spatial resolution of up to 50 lp/mm at a focal spot size of about 10 μm. Radiographs of whole female breast specimens as well as paraffin blocks were taken at magnifications up to x10. The initial results revealed numerous microcalcifications smaller than <100 μm that had not been detected by conventional grid mammography. The combination of a microfocal spot with digital radiography results in as yet unmatched resolution of microcalcifications and makes the advantages of image postprocessing available to mammography. However, specific types of calcification could not be established in malignant or benign histological findings. (orig.)
Abstract (German)
Spezielle Roentgenroehren mit elektromagnetischer Fokussierung des Elektronenstrahls erlauben mit Brennfleckgroessen um 10 μm eine Ortsaufloesung von bis zu 50 Lp/mm. Es wurden Aufnahmen von Ablations- und Resektionspraeparaten sowie Paraffinschnitten von Mammagewebe mit einer Vergroesserung bis 10:1 aufgenommen. Die ersten Ergebnisse zeigen zahlreiche Mikrokalzifikationen in einem Groessenbereich <100 μm, die mit der konventionellen Rastermammographie nicht nachweisbar sind. Die Kombination einer Mikrofokusroehre mit einem digitalen Aufnahmesystem fuehrt zu einer bisher unerreichten Strukturaufloesung von Mikrokalzifikationen und macht die Vorteile der Bildnachverarbeitung fuer die Mammographie verfuegbar. Hinweise fuer spezifische Kalzifikationsformen bei malignen und benignen Histologien konnten an den Praeparaten allerdings nicht gefunden werden. (orig.)Additional details
