Gamma emission tomography. Basic technological aspects

Description

This paper is devoted to principal gamma emission transaxial tomography systems and to their fundamental technology. Fundamental technology is concerned first by material (detectors, acquisition and data processing systems) and secondly, by algorithms. Major problems such as auto-attenuation, collimation, counting statistics, as well as sampling are considered. We indicate their influence on the resulting reconstruction and some presently proposed solutions. In the second part of this paper, we analyse systems, comparing their principal characteristics and their performances the most critical for a clinical use

Abstract (French)

Cet article traite de la technologie fondamentale et des principaux systemes en tomographie transaxiale utilisant les emetteurs gamma. La technologie fondamentale concerne d'une part le materiel (detecteurs, systemes d'acquisition et de traitement des donnees ...) d'autre part les algorithmes. Nous en abordons les problemes majeurs tels que l'auto-attenuation, la collimation, les statistiques de comptage et l'echantillonnage, en indiquant leurs influences sur la reconstruction terminale ainsi que certaines solutions proposees actuellement. Cette etude constitue la premiere partie de l'article. Dans la deuxieme partie, nous analysons les principaux systemes existants de tomographie gamma en comparant leurs caracteristiques les plus importantes ainsi que leurs performances les plus utiles en clinique
