230Th/234U age of an elevated notch and quaternary uplift of Rurutu, Austral Islands

Description
The limestone cliffs of Rurutu, rising roughly one hundred meters high, date back less than 1.85 M.a. and are cut by two uninterrupted marine notches corresponding to former shores. The upper notch dates back 122,000 years and is situated about +8/+10m above the present reef flat. The lower notch, slightly above the present reef flat, corresponds to a +1.7 m height of the Holocene sea. Comparison with the French Polynesian island of Makatea yields an uplift rate for Rurutu of approximately +0.1 mm/year since the early Quaternary

Les falaises calcaires de Rurutu, qui atteignent une centaine de metres d'altitude, datent d'il y a moins de 1,85 M.a. et sont entaillees par deux alignements d'encoches continues, correspondant a d'anciens rivages a +8/+10m et peu au-dessus du palier actuel. L'encoche superieure a ete datee 122 k.a. L'encoche inferieure correspond a un niveau de la mer holocene qui a atteint +1,7 m. Une comparaison avec Makatea (Polynesie francaise) permet d'etablir des vitesses de soulevement de Rurutu de l'ordre de +0,1 mm/an depuis le Quaternaire ancienAdditional details
