Surface photometry and mass distributions of spiral galaxies
Description
A computerized system for performing surface photometry of galaxies is described and illustrated by the results for NGC 157, an isolated SAB(rs)bc galaxy of luminosity class I. An extra outer exponential component has been found in the U, B, V and R reduced profiles. The radial variation of M/L has been studied by extrapolating the observed rotation curve. An explanation for the gross structure and detailed colour and M/L variations has been given in terms of the density wave theory of spiral structure. This explanation implies that the rotation curve NGC 157 is not flat at large radii, approximately 25 kpc, as it would be if a massive halo were present. (author)
