Description
A report is given of the French safety rationale behind its PWR nuclear power programme. A three level approach is adopted: prevention by quality, monitoring and protection, and safeguarding. A complementary probabilistic approach is described with a probability target of 10-6 per year for a reactor. Other topics covered include reactor operation and severe accident management, R and D programmes aimed at developing accident management procedures and the emergency organization in France for the case of a nuclear power plant accident.
