Description

The fusion-fission of 3.89 GeV 238U ions in a CR-39 plastic detector has been studied using a 2π-geometry technique. Our results show that 238U nuclei undergo fusion reactions with 1H, 12C and 16O leading to highly excited compound nuclei which evaporate α-particles before fission. In this work we describe a new application of CR-39 for detecting evaporated α-particles during the passage of energetic 238U ions in the detector matrix. Important findings of the experiment are discussed. (author)
