Design PSA for AREVAs recent BWR KERENA trademark with passive safety systems

  • 1. AREVA NP GmbH, Erlangen (Germany)

Description

AREVA designed an innovative BWR reactor KERENA trademark (former SWR 1000). The most important innovative element of the safety concept is the accident management with passive safety systems. The incidence frequency of beyond-design based accidents is shifted towards practical improbability. In case of a severe accident the corium stabilization is reached by a coolable configuration within the reactor pressure vessel with external cooling. The authors describe the PSA (probabilistic safety analysis) level 1 and level 2 aimed to demonstrate the design targets of a core damage frequency of smaller 10-7/a and an early fission product release frequency of smaller 10-8/a.
