Trials with X-rays and gamma rays on oil palm pollen and seeds

Description

In a first attempt to use induced mutations as an additional source for genetic variability in oil palms, pollen of various tree types was irradiated with γ-rays. Preliminary results show great differences in radio-sensitivity of different types of pollen and indicate increased damage during transport after irradiation. Irradiation of seeds with γ-rays of 20-100 kR indicated a positive effect upon initiation of germinations. The results need to be confirmed in a replicated trial. X-rays have been used for a non-destructive classification of seeds. The technique shows promise for the plant breeder but needs further refinement. (author)
