Combined Effect of Gamma Irradiation and Chitosan Coating on Physical and Chemical Properties of Plum Fruits

  • 1. Food Irradiation Department, National Center for Radiation Research and Technology (NCRRT), Atomic Energy Authority, Nasr City, Cairo (Egypt)

Description

Gamma irradiation treatment (0.5, 0.75, 1.0 and 1.5 kGy) was tested for its effects physical and chemical properties of kelsey plum fruits under cold storage (0±1°C) during 2014 and 2015 seasons and at different storage periods (weeks). Gamma irradiation cause increasing in plum fruits firmness on different storage periods also gamma irradiation miti - gated the decreasing in weight loss and significantly reduced percentage of discarded fruits, respiration rate of plum fruits but SSC and acidity give a fluctuation results on different storage periods. Chitosan coating (1, 2 and 3%) is beneficial to increase fruit firmness and decreasing weight loss, discarded fruits and respiration rate of plum fruits on different storage periods under cold storage (0±1°C), but SSC and acidity give a fluctuation results as gamma irradiation. Results indicated that gamma irradiation (1 kGy) combined with chitosan coating (3%) was better than irradiation or coating individually
