Innovative completion technology enhances production assurance in Alaskan North Slope viscous-oil developments

Description

This paper presented details of swelling rubber packer (SRP) technology applications in the North Slope viscous oil reservoirs in Alaska. SRP technology is based on specially designed swelling properties of rubber in crude or mineral oil based mud (MOBM) to expand and seal the annulus. It was suggested that the successful application of SRPs has resulted in the addition of new zones in the development. Operators on the North Slope have also used the technology to isolate conductive fault crossings. Multiple SRPs have been run in single laterals to achieve isolation without the unwanted effects on liner running drag. Case studies were presented relating to SRP installation and field operations. Considerations associated with the design and installation of SRPs in viscous oil environments were reviewed. A geologic discussion and development history of the North Slope area was presented. Viscosity levels and completion fluid details were presented, as well as different SRP configurations for specific downhole conditions. It was concluded that SRP technology is a key enabling technology that reduces total well construction costs by eliminating extra material and operational expenses, as well as reducing the complexity and non-productive time associated with completion washpipe operations.
