The production of hadrons with high transverse momenta in 400 and 800 GeV/c proton-nucleus interactions

Description

Experiment 605 at FNAL has measured the inclusive production of single hadrons and hadron pairs in 400 and 800 GeV proton-nucleus interactions (√s=27 and 39 GeV). Results are presented on the angular dependence for the inclusive single hadron production cross section in the region 0.4 < XT < 0.6 and on the atomic weight dependence of the production of single hadrons with transverse momenta between 4 and 10 GeV/c, as well as on that of the production of hadron pairs with effective masses between 7 and 15 GeV/c2. The measured angular dependence is compared to Lund-Model and leading-log QCD calculations. The Anomalous Nuclear Enhancement for the production of single hadrons is remeasured and is shown to disappear at transverse momenta greater than 7 GeV/c. A nuclear suppression of the production of hadron pairs with effective masses greater than 8 GeV/c2 is observed
