Percutaneous radiofrequency ablation of osteoid osteoma

To present our initial experience in the treatment of osteoid osteoma by means of radiofrequency ablation. Three female patients, ranging between 5 and 19 years of age, were treated for tumors in proximal femur, tibia or calcaneus. General anesthesia was employed in two cases and conscious sedation in one. Computed tomography-guided imaging was used to introduce a trephine for placement of the electrode tip in the nidus. The electrode was connected to the radiofrequency generator for 8 minutes. Pain disappeared within 48 hours in all three patients, none of whom required a hospital stay of more than 24 hours. Normal physical activity without restrictions was restored immediately after discharge. Three to four months later, the three patients remain asymptomatic. Percutaneous radiofrequency ablation of osteoid osteoma is an effective and safe approach that avoids the complications associated with surgery. (Author) 15 refs
