Description
In this paper the ion implantation technique for surface engineering is introduced. Its advantages and limitations are discussed. It is compared with other techniques and some proven as well as potential applications are presented. It is now well established that ion implantation offers many advantages over other techniques in preparing surfaces with improved wear, oxidation and corrosion resistance. 30-100 keV nitrogen ion beam has been the most widely used beam for the tribological applications. Some of the notable examples of ion implanted components with greatly improved properties are: dies, punches, cutting tools, drills, moulds, nuclear fuel rod casings, bearings, turbine blades and orthopedic prostheses. High current ion implanters are now available suitable for commercial applications. The paper reviews the field and opines about the future trends of surface engineering vis-a-vis the ion implantation technique. (author). 15 refs., 6 figs
