District heating of the Zagreb area using heat generation from the Prevlaka nuclear power plant
Description
The city of Zagreb has no energy sources of its own, and is dependent on heat supply from neighbouring areas. For the period 1985-2000 it is expected that the population of Zagreb together with its surroundings (1200 km2) will increase from about 950,000 (some 316,000 apartments) to about 1.19 million inhabitants (some 418,000 apartments). The centralized heat supply will play an important role, covering 40-50% of the heat requirements. The paper discusses Yugoslav plans to build three to six nuclear power plants by the end of the century. The first, planned to start in 1992-94, will be on the Sava River, about 30 km downstream from Zagreb, at a site called Prevlaka. Several studies are being made on the question of decoupling heat from this NPP to supply Zagreb. (author)
