Bioceramics of apatites: an option for bone regeneration

  • 1. Universidade Estadual Paulista Julio de Mesquita Filho (UNESP), Araraquara, SP (Brazil). Instituto de Quimica

Description

The bioceramics of calcium phosphate called apatite, are widely used as material for bone replacement and regeneration, due to its similarity to the mineral component of bones and teeth. The apatites are biocompatible, bioactive and integrate with living tissue by the same active process of physiological bone remodeling. These bioceramics may be used in medical, dental and orthopedic applications. In this research, it was used the wet method for the synthesis of the powder and biomimetic method for coating the surface. The Solubility study was performed in the layer deposited, apatite, for possible application as a platform for inorganic drug delivery. The bioceramics were characterized by MEV, DRX, and EDS. The curves of solubility of apatite in coatings showed that the OCP phase had a higher rate of release in the short term (4 days) while the HA phase showed a gradual release throughout the experiment (16 days).
