Method of Measurement of environmental Gamma Radioactivity in Foodstuffs

Description
A study on the determination of a method of measurement of environmental gamma radioactivity in foodstuff samples has been carried out. The work involved the characterisation of the detector system used and the analysis of the samples. The system characterisation includes the determination of optimum volume to fill the sample container, absolute full energy peak efficiency, detection limits, and correction factors due to the differences in the density of samples. Examples of the measurement results are given for foodstuff samples produced and sold in East Sussex and Surrey Counties in England. By comparing results with the reference levels set by the WHO/FAO and NRPB, it can be concluded that the activity found in several samples analysed in the experiment was below both levels.
