Surface and residual-hole effects in electron emission from solids

Description
We investigate the excitation of bulk and surface plasmons during the emission of electrons in the proximity of a solid surface, taking into account the effects due to the sudden creation of the electron and the residual hole. We use the dielectric function formalism and the specular reflection model for describing the process. The results illustrate in detail how the different interactions of the electron and the hole with the bulk and surface perturbations develop during the movement of the electron. For a simple plasmon-pole approximation of the dielectric function, our integrated energy loss agrees with previous results from other authors for the internal emission case. Finally, the importance of surface effects in the analysis of photoelectron spectroscopy experiments is investigated. (orig.)
