Radiation protection problems in a laboratory for the labelling of molecules with carbon-11

Description

This paper shows that the qualities of carbon-11, especially its short half-life, which suit it so well for the labelling of radiopharmaceuticals prove to be a great handicap in the preparation of these substances. The operator has to make a fresh preparation for each examination and start with strong radioactivities (200 to 500 mCi) in order to obtain an adequate injected activity at the end of the process, the absorbed dose averaging 1.5 man-rem per manipulation at the fingertips. The development of an automatic preparation method involving as little manual interference as possible has halved the collective dose for twice the dose handled. The labelling of molecules used for diagnosis is now considered to take place under satisfactory radioprotection conditions. The fingertip irradiations are analysed in the light of CIPR recommendations, while regretting that in publication 26 this problem of partial external irradiation of the skin is not dealt with as clearly and precisely as before

Abstract (French)

On a rappele dans cette communication que les qualites du carbone-11, en particulier sa courte periode, qui justifient l'interet qu'il suscite pour le marquage des produits pharmaceutiques, se revelent etre un inconvenient important pour le preparateur. Celui-ci doit faire une preparation pour chaque examen, partir de radioactivites elevees (200 a 500 mCi) pour aboutir a une activite injectee suffisante au bout du temps de preparation (20 mCi), la dose absorbee etant en moyenne de 1,5 homme-rem par manipulation a l'extremite des doigts. La mise au point d'une methode automatique de preparation limitant le plus possible les interventions manuelles a permis de reduire la dose collective de moitie alors que l'activite manipulee etait doublee. On considere que les operations de marquage des molecules utilisees pour le diagnostic sont maintenant executees dans des conditions de radioprotection suffisantes. On a analyse les irradiation des extremites a la lumiere des recommandations de la CIPR en deplorant que dans la publication 26 ce probleme de l'irradiation externe partielle de la peau ne soit pas aborde de facon aussi claire et precise que precedemment
