A study of zinc toxicity for the shrimp Palaemon Serratus Pennant

Description
An experimental pollution of shrimps by stable zinc (ZnCl2) during 30 d. allowed to determine the lowest amount (1 mg/l) in sea water leading to high lethality. The kinetics of Zn uptake were studied using 65Zn. Zn retention seemed to result mainly from adsorption processes and acute pathological effects from flocculation of the branchial mucus leading to death by asphyxiation
Abstract (French)
Une pollution experimentale de crevettes roses par le zinc stable (ZnCl2), pendant 30 j., a permis de definir la quantite minimale (1 mg/l) dans l'eau de mer entrainant une mortalite superieure a la normale. Des experiences avec 65Zn ont permis d'etudier la dynamique d'accumulation du zinc. L'accumulation du zinc par l'espece semble due particulierement a un phenomene d'absorption et l'effet pathologique aigu a la floculation du mucus branchial provoquant la mort par asphyxieAdditional details
