Automation of rotary calciner for continuous calcination of UO3 microspheres

  • 1. Fuel Chemistry Div., Bhabha Atomic Research Centre, Mumbai (India)

Description

Feeding operations of a Rotary Calciner, an equipment used for calcination of UO3 to U3O8 in Sol Gel Microsphere Pelletization (SGMP) technique, are automated by means of pneumatic conveying controlled by electronic timer. Using the automated sequence of pneumatic conveying operations, UO3 microspheres could be calcined to U3O8 microspheres in the rotary calciner, on a continuous basis at a throughput of one kg/h.
