Feasibility study of BF3 neutron detectors for monitoring plutonium in waste packets
- 1. Radiation Safety Systems Division, Bhabha Atomic Research Centre, Mumbai (India)
Description
The presence of highly active fission products in the waste drum will interfere in the gamma ray spectrum making it difficult for the estimation of plutonium with gamma spectrometry using NaI(Tl) detector. In such situation the screening system based on neutron detector helps in reporting the plutonium content. Present paper describes the studies carried out on the feasibility of screening plutonium in waste packets using three BF3 neutron detectors with 3.8 cm HDPE moderator arranged in two configurations. Present system can detect ∼ 125 mg of Research Reactor Grade (RRG) and ∼ 40 mg of Power Reactor Grade Plutonium (PRG). (author)
