Volume 1: Ductile cast iron with nodular graphite as a material for spent-fuel transport and storage casks

Under the aproval and licensing procedure for spent fuel transport and storage casks made of ductile cast iron with nodular graphite, the Bundesanstalt fuer Materialpruefung (BAM) ('Federal Institute for Materials Testing') performed an official suitability assessment of both the design and the grade material. This report describes the cask safety philosophy as well as the basic material requirements which are in part derived from deterministic and probabilistic considerations compared with the requirements on pressure vessels and nuclear components. It includes a discussion of the approved quality-assurance measures required to arrive at a consistent quality of all serial casks. (orig.)
