Stress wave loading of a tunnel: A benchmark study

Description
Five different finite element or discrete element computer codes were used to solve a sequence of problems leading to the problem of stress-wave loading of a circular tunnel in a jointed rock mass. The finite element codes use either slidelines or joint elements to represent explicitly the mechanical behavior of joints. For the problems specified, slip displacement on the joints was less than the joint spacing. Results show that both discrete element and finite element codes can be used to obtain satisfactory solutions to such problems
