Use of ferromagnetic artifact to remove unwanted MR signal

Description
To determine if ferromagnetic artifact could be used to remove unwanted superficial tissue signal, the authors spread iron filings uniformly over adhesive tape. The sealed tape was placed on the abdomen, and MR images were obtained. The iron filings produced ferromagnetic artifacts that removed the superficial tissue signal. The greater the iron filing density, the greater the artifact. The artifact was greater for the gradient refocused echo technique compared with the spin-echo technique. The artifact could be positioned. Using the iron filing tape, they were able to remove the superficial tissue signal anterior and posterior to the aorta and inferior vena cava. This technique is technically simple
