Intraoperative treatment of ovary in a case of uterine carcinoma in which radiotherapy is expected

Transplantation of the ovary, in which the ovary together with the ovarian artery and vein is moved from the pelvis to the area out of the irradiation field (the part under the mammary region or the upper part of the lateral abdomen), has been clinically applied in the treatment of uterine carcinoma. The operative procedures and postoperative results from the endocrine function tests of the transplanted ovary were outlined. Postoperative irradiation of 5,000 rad of Lineac x-rays in 25 divided doses to the pelvis was done. Exposure doses were approximately 20 rad in the part under the mammary region, 100 rad in the upper part of the lateral abdomen, and 160 rad in the lateral abdomen (the upper part of the ilium). These doses are considered to be within the safe range for maintaining the ovarian endocrine function. (Namekawa, K.)
