Shock absorbing properties toroidal shells under compression, 1
Description
Toroidal shells are the form suitable to the shock absorbers for cylindrical casks, and their shock absorbing property is stable because they are made of metals. In this study, for the purpose of grasping the basic characteristics corresponding to vertical fall, the relation of static force and deflection was to be determined by the axisymmetric compression of toroidal shells with rigid plates. The author assumed that axisymmetric deformation arises due to axisymmetric compression, and the length in meridian direction is invariable, and extended the increment type Rayleigh-Ritz method by the development into Fourier series to toroidal shells. Static compression test was carried out on the toroidal shells made of SUS304 with three different sizes and closed and open cross sections. The method of approximate analysis, the experiment and the comparison of both results are reported. (J.P.N.)
