On dependence of activity coefficient upon electrolyte concentration

  • 1. AN SSSR, Moscow. Inst. Geokhimii i Analiticheskoj Khimii

Description

An evaluation has been made of separate terms in the equation describing the dependence of the ionic activity coefficient on the concentration of the electrolyte. An analysis has been made of the relationship between the logarithm of the mean ionic activity coefficient (lg γsub(+-)) and the molal concentration (m) of alkaline and alkali earth chlorides. The lgsub(+-) can be represented in the form: lgγsub(+-)=lgγsub(A)+lgγsub(K); where, lgγsub(A)-contribution due to the interionic interaction according to the mass action law, lgγsub(k)-effect of total hydration of ions in cluster. The true ionic activity coefficient (γsub(A)), depending on the concentration of salt, varies from unity to a certain minimal value characteristic for a given electrolyte, and with an increase in the concentration of the latter it remains unchanged
