Radiation-induced explosion destruction of polymethylmethacrylate by cooling
- 1. Nauchno-Issledovatel'skij Fiziko-Khimicheskij Inst., Moscow (USSR)
Description
A new radiation effect, i.e. explosive destruction of γ-irradiated polymethylmethacrylate is found. Multiple cracks of various forms appear in the case of cooling in γ-irradiated samples, their mechanical strength disappears. At the doses approximately 0.1 MGy the destruction occurs at 77 K, with dose increase - at higher temperatures. Possible processes lying in the basis of the effect found are discussed
