Formation of secondary amine in the radiolysis of trilaurylamine

  • 1. Bhabha Atomic Research Centre, Bombay (India). Radiochemistry Div.

Description

The yield of secondary amine (R2NH) in the gamma radiolysis of trilaurylamine (TLA) under various conditions has been determined spectro-photometrically. In the radiolysis of TLA-benzene system, the G(R2NH) has been found to increase linearly with the concentration of TLA, ultimately reaching a value of 4 for pure TLA. The machanism of R2NH formation has been explained through the cleavage of C-N bond and subsequent hydrogen abstraction reaction of R2N radical intermediate. In the case of acid equilibrated solution of TLA in benzene, it has been found that the protonation of TLA inhibits R2NH formation whereas, in the presence of nitrate small amounts of R2NH is formed. The results are discussed. (author)
