Design and construction of a small modular stellarator for the magnetic confinement of plasmas

Description

Full text: This technological development research project seeks to implement a small scale modular stellarator magnetic confinement device for research in high temperature and low density plasmas. To date very little research has been developed in the engineering and physics of small-scale modular stellarator devices, so the technological development of this project will bring knowledge and innovation in the area of stellarators. The device, called Stellarator of Costa Rica 1 (SCR-1) currently has a toroidal aluminum vacuum chamber with a radius greater than 238.1 mm and a radius of cross section of 94.4 mm. The plasma will have a radius less than 54.1 mm and a volume of 13.75 liters (0.01 m3), with an aspect ratio of> 4.4. The resonant magnetic field will be 0.0438 T, and will have a period of 2 (m = 2) with a flat rotational transform profile of 0.3. The magnetic field will be generated by means of 12 modular coils, each composed of 6 turns, with an electric current of 4600 A (767 A per revolution). The current will be powered by a stationary bank of batteries, which will provide 767 A for each discharge, where each pulse will last from 4 s to 10 s. The plasma will be heated by Electron Cyclotron Resonance Heating (ECRH) through two magnetrons, one of 2 kW and the other of 3 kW, in the second harmonic at 2.45 GHz. The expected electronic density and temperature is 13 eV (150800 K) and 5 x 1016 m-3 respectively with a confinement time estimated at 5.70 x 10-4 ms. The initial diagnoses of SCR-1 will be a Langmuir probe consisting of a boron nitride head and a four-point tungsten matrix, a heterodyne microwave interferometer (28 GHz frequency, corresponding to the wavelength of? = 10.71 mm), an optical spectrometer (iHR550 three-core spectrometer configured for Plasma / Emissions Analysis, output port for multichannel Charge Cloupled Device (CCD) detector, multichannel output port for PMT or DSS, custom fiber optic for coupling), a system for mapping the magnetic field and a CCD camera. The proposed device will not be able to generate nuclear fusion processes.
