Conservative surgery and radiotherapy with soft tissue sarcomas

Since April 1979 through March 1989, 45 adults with soft tissue sarcomas were treated by conservative surgery and radiotherapy. A five-year survival and local recurrence rates were 81% and 22%, respectively. Location of the tumor, symptoms, pathological grade, direct invasion, and surgical margin have prognostic significance for local recurrence. Significant complications occurred in 16% of the patients. Complications might be diminished by carefully individualized treatment planning. A local recurrence rate was 11% (4/36) with combination of wide or marginal resection and the radiotherapy. (author)
