Description
The friction that is generated between piping and its supports is generally known to reduce the seismic response of piping systems. Vibration tests were performed on a 216 mm laboratory piping system containing a special friction support that was specifically designed to dissipate energy and thereby limit deflections and stresses. A simplified seismic response analysis method was developed that uses an iterative process to determine the damping associated with the friction support. By comparing the displacements calculated for the laboratory piping system using the mathematical model with the corresponding displacements measured in experiments, the analysis method was determined to provide conservative results. This paper summarizes the response reduction effect of the friction supports, and describes the method developed to analyze the system
