Isotopic analysis by means of emission spectroscopy

Description
The fundamentals of emission spectroscopic isotope analysis are the differences in the nuclear masses and nuclear volumes of the individual isotopes which lead to an isotope shift in the terms and thus to shifting of the lines in the optic spectrum. The differences in wavelength for uranium isotopes in the spectral region of 4,000 to 6,000 Angstroem are of the order of 50 to 100 milli-Angstroem, those for plutonium isotopes between 75 and 25 milli-Angstroem. This means that the spectral apparatus must have a high resolution power. Influencing factors such as intensity effects on neighbouring lines and influence of the excitation source, are discussed. Grundlage der emissionsspektroskopischen Isotopenanalyse sind die Unterschiede in Kernmassen und Kernvolumen der einzelnen Isotope, die zu einer Isotopieverschiebung in den Termen fuehrt und damit zu einer Verschiebung der Linien im optischen Spektrum. Die Wellenlaengendifferenzen fuer Uranisotope im Spektralbereich 4.000 bis 6.000 Angstroem liegen in der Groessenordnung zwischen 50 und 100 milli-Angstroem, die fuer Plutoniumisotope zwischen 75 und 25 milli-Angstroem. Dies setzt ein hohes Aufloesevermoegen des Spektralapparates voraus. Beeinflussende Faktoren - wie Intensitaetsbeeinflussung benachbarter Linien, Einfluss der Anregungsquelle - werden diskutiert.
