Description

The X-ray structural investigation of single crystals of uranium polyphosphate (U(PO3)4-1) obtained from a melt of polyphosphate salts, has been performed. The structure is described as belonging to the rhombic type: a=6.907(1), b=14.947(2), c=8.986(1)A, z=4, the Pbsub(cn) space group. The crystals are made up of U-antiprisms (U-Osub(medium) 2.356A) and polyphosphate chains twisted into double spirals. The bond length in the chain are differentiated: P-Osub(bridge) from 1.556(12) to 1.604(5)A, P-Osub(con) from 1.429(11) to 1.541(10)A. It is shown that U(PO3)4-1 belongs to the structural type of Zr(PO3)4-1
