IRAS FIR observations of galaxies are briefly characterized. Topics addressed include IRAS detection rates and completeness for galaxies, the FIR luminosity function, the derivation of star-formation rates, and the origin of the FIR flux as thermal emission from (1) warm dust associated with young O and B stars and (2) grains heated by the general interstellar radiation field. 39 references
