Face-centered-cubic Nb-Si solid solutions produced by picosecond pulsed laser quenching

  • 1. Division of Applied Sciencies, Harvard University, Cambridge, Massachusetts 02138

Description

Face-centered-cubic Nb/sub 100-x/Si/sub x/ solid solutions (10< or =x< or =27) have been produced by 30-ps pulsed laser irradiation, using a Nd:YAG laser with a fluence of about 1 J/cm2. The lattice parameters of these solutions suggest that the solute atoms can be interstitial or substitutional, probably as a result of a change in the quenching conditions
