Radionuclide production at the University of Missouri research reactor
Description
Reactor-produced radionuclides have wide applications in biological and biochemical research and in nuclear medicine diagnosis and therapy of disease. The University of Missouri Research Reactor (MURR) has long played a prominent role in these applications, beginning with isotope open-quotes seedclose quotes implants and (n, γ) 99Mo for 99mTc generators >25 yr ago. In the last 20 yr MURR's radioisotope production has focused on research and development of therapeutic beta emitters such as 90Y microspheres; 188W 188Re and 166 Dy/ 166Ho generators; and high-specific-activity 153Sm, 186Re, 166Ho, 177Lu, and 105Rh. Production of 192Ir and 198Au for therapeutic seeds has continued, while MURR irradiations to produce 35S, 32P, and (most recently) 33P continue to supply a significant fraction of the world's market
