A study on marine organisms as indicators of radioactive pollution in environmental monitoring

Description

Based on the 'Basic plan for Onagawa Nuclear Power Station to measure environmental radioactivity and hot wastewater,' 'Eisenia bicyclis (arame)' has traditionally been positioned as an indicator marine product to measure radioactivity. However, there were concerns that a decrease in seaweed would proceed and collection of 'arame' would become difficult in the Oshika Peninsula. In view of this situation, as an alternative sample, 'Sargassum yezoense' was subject to trial collection, radioactivity measurement and concentration coefficient calculation. As a result, its compatibility as an indicator marine product was confirmed, and 'Sargassum yezoense' was positioned as an indicator marine product from FY2019. This action has made it possible to reduce the frequency of collecting 'arame' and maintain an appropriate radioactivity monitoring system. (A.O.)

Abstract (Japanese)

女川原子力発電所環境放射能及び温排水測定基本計画等に基づき,従来からアラメを指標海産物に位置づけて放射能を測定してきたが,海藻の減少が牡鹿半島においても進行し,近い将来アラメの採取が困難となることが懸念された。この状況に鑑み,代替試料としてエゾノネジモクの試験採取及び放射能測定,濃縮係数の算出を行ったところ,指標海産物としての適合性が確認され,2019年度からエゾノネジモクを指標海産物に位置付けた。これにより,アラメの採取頻度の低減及び,適切な放射能監視体制の維持を両立することが可能となった。(著者)
