Photooxidation of Am(3) by waters in bicarbonate-carbonate solutions

Description

Effect of ultraviolet and visible light on 1.1x10-4 mole/l aqueous solutions of Am(3) containing KHCO3 and K2CO3+KHCO3 is studied using spectrometry technique. It is determined that at UV-light irradiation Am(4) is formed step-by-step. In 6 hs its concentration reaches approximately 60% of Am(3) initial concentration. Under irradiation of a specially prepared Am(4) in KHCO3-K2CO3 solutions its partial reduction up to Am(3) occurs. Initial rates of Am(4) accumulation depend on Am(3) concentration, pH and on HCO3- and CO32- total concentration. Oxygen occurrence does not affect the rate of process. 510.6 mm wave length laser radiation does not result in Am(3) oxidation. Assumption is made that Am(3) excited complex ion forms excimer with unexcited ion of Am(3). H2 splitting from this excimer results in Am(4) initiation. 13 refs., 2 figs
