ALICE: the experiment and its performance

Description

Being mainly devoted to heavy-ion physics, the ALICE experiment at the Lhc collider at CERN will also deal with great interest with the first pp collisions. In this paper, the ALICE detector will be presented, together with its expected performance as far as some selected first physics topics are concerned.
