High spin and signature inversion in 76Br and 78Br

Description

High-spin states in the odd-odd nucleus 76Br were populated with the reaction 63Cu(16O,n2p), using a 69 MeV16 O,n2p beam from the Pittsburgh EN-tandem, and in 78Br with the reaction 70Zn(11B,p2n), using a 45, MeV 11B beam from the FSU FN-tandem. The Pitt multidetector array with six Compton-suppressed HPGe detectors and the Pitt-FSU array with 10 Compton-supressed HPGe detectors were used to collect γ-γ coincidene data for 76Br and 78Br, respectively. In both nuclei, the level schemes have been extended considerably, and when possible multipolarities have been investigated using DCO ratios. The features of the level schemes, particularly the signature inversions in the yrast bands will be compared to the results of cranked Woods-Saxon, Strutinsky shell-model calculations with self-consistent pairing
