Tensor Polarization in Elastic Electron-Deuteron Scattering between 0.65 and 1.8 (GeV/c)2
Description
In elastic electron-deuteron scattering, the tensor polarization moments t20, t21 and t22, together with the unpolarized cross section, have been measured up to a momentum transfer Q2 of 1.8 (GeV/c)2, thus probing the electromagnetic structure of the deuteron at very short distances. The experiment was performed at Jefferson Laboratory in Hall C using the recoil deuteron polarimeter POLDER in coincidence with the electron spectrometer HMS. It extends considerably the range of tensor polarization data available and provide overlap with previous data. Preliminary results will be presented. t20 is observed to pass through 0 at Q2 near 0.88 (GeV/c)2 and rise to a value close to the allowed maximum in the region of Q2 near 1.8 (GeV/c)2
