Observation of the phase shift of the wave function of the neutron under total reflection

Description

By means of a thin semi-transparent film as an interference element the phase shift of the wave function of a massive particle, the neutron, under total reflection has been observed. This effect may turn out to be useful in the study of magnetic properties and other details of the structure of thin films and the surface of solids. By reflection of polarized neutrons the magnetization (10200±350 Gs) and the roughness of the upper boundary (51±5 A) of a thermally sputtered 5000 A thick iron film as well as the roughness of the glass substrate (10±4 A) have been found. 18 refs.; 6 figs
