Fabrication of mullite and mullite-based composites by transient viscous sintering of composite powders

  • 1. Univ. of Florida, Gainesville (United States)

Description

Submicron particles with a composite structure of alumina/silica were synthesized using a solution technique. These powders were used to prepare bulk samples of mullite and mullite-based composites (e.g., mullite/alumina, mullite/zirconia, mullite/silicon carbide whisker). Results are presented concerning the (i) physical, chemical, and colloidal characteristics of the composite powders, and (ii) densification behavior and microstructure development during behavior and microstructure development during sintering of the composite powders. Preliminary information on physical properties of the bulk samples are also reported
