The article reviews in outline 5 accidents featured in the Proceedings of a Conference on medical response to effects of ionizing radiation London, U.K. 28/30 June 1989. Three of the featured accidents were those at Windscale (1957), Three Mile Island (1979) and Chernobyl (1986). The two discussed in greater detail were those at Exeter (1988) in relation to the importance of radiotherapy planning and Goiana, Brazil (1987). (author)
