Description

Seven contributions were presented in this session. The first contribution was the only investigation of nuclear structure in a heavy nucleus to be presented in this session; here new data were presented on the magnetization of an f7/2 neutron in 41Ca. These data are well described within the framework of the shell model, in that the shape of the f7/2 neutron orbit is in good agreement with the predictions of mean-field calculations. Uncertainties in the radius of the orbit of the f7/2 neutron in 41Ca are now very small. The other contributions were focused on few-nucleon systems and in particular emphasized polarization degrees of freedom. New experimental techniques to measure polarization degrees of freedom are being developed and extensive programs of measurements using polarized beams and polarized targets are planned at the new continuous beam facilities that will soon be available in many laboratories around the world. The data presented here show that considerable progress has been achieved, in particular for the measurement of the tensor polarization in elastic electron-deuteron scattering. Such experiments are very difficult; however, we now clearly see a breakthrough occurring in these measurements, and for the first time the results are really sensitive to theoretical hypotheses. The separation of the charge and quadrupole form factors of the deuteron is now within our reach. (orig.)
