The nuclear magnetic moment of 26Al by atomic beam laser spectroscopy
- 1. Schuster Laboratory, University of Manchester, M13 9PL (United Kingdom)
Description
The magnetic dipole moment has been deduced for the 5+ nuclear ground state of the self-conjugate nucleus 26Al from the hyperfine splitting of the atomic 2P1/2 ground state. The hyperfine structure of the 308.2 nm 2P1/2-2D3/2 transition was measured by laser resonance fluorescence of an atomic beam. The tunable ultraviolet light was generated by frequency doubling using a lithium iodate crystal within the cavity of a dye laser. The result of μ(5+) = +2.804(4)μN fits well with the systematics of neighbouring d5/2-subshell nuclei and its small difference from the pure Schmidt value is satisfactorily described by a shell-model calculation in the full 2s1d shell.
