British nuclear achievements

A brief account is given of the development of Magnox reactors in Britain, in parallel with the development of boiling water and pressurized water reactors in USA. Problems arising in connection with Magnox reactors, and their solutions, are described. The economics of nuclear power in relation to coal and oil are discussed, and the reasons for planning a next generation of reactors are given. The choice of the AGR, and its successes and problems are discussed. The position of nuclear power worldwide and in Britain is considered. British work on the fast breeder reactor and proposals for its further development are described. (UK)
