Initial operation of RIKEN ring cyclotron

  • 1. Institute of Physical and Chemical Research, Wako, Saitama (Japan)

Description

After approximately six year construction period, RIKEN Ring Cyclotron (RRC) was successfully commissioned on December 16, 1986. The routine operation of RRC has been made since April, 1987. April and May were devoted to the machine studies, and beams have been delivered to the experiments since the end of May. The maximum beam intensity extracted during these runs reached 600 enA for 40Ar13+ at 26 MeV/u; 200 enA for both 40Ar12+ at 21 MeV/u and 14,15N6+ at 33.7 MeV/u; 10 enA for 65Cu18+ at 16.7 MeV/u. The pulse width of the extracted 40Ar12+ beam of 21 MeV/u was measured to be 700 ps at the position 20 m downstream from RRC. The initial operational status of RRC is described as well as the running construction program of the new injector, a K70 AVF cyclotron with an external ECR source. (author)
