Impressed current effects on a metal subject to different electrolytes
- 1. CDTN/CNEN-MG, Belo Horizonte, MG (Brazil)
Description
Cathodic protection is a technique that prevents metal corrosion on the applied surface by utilizing impressed current. However, its effectiveness is limited to the electrolyte to which the impressed current is applied, leaving other exposed surfaces vulnerable. This study presents an experiment examining the behavior of low-carbon steel exposed to two electrically isolated electrolytes, one with impressed current and the other one without. A theoretical approach explaining the electronic mechanics involved in the results is also provided. The objective is to provide a method for protecting metallic structures of nuclear research reactors and storage pools for irradiated fuel elements. (author)
